At October meetings, the Forsyth County Board of Commissioners approved an array of items that represent different aspects of county government.

Highlights include several extensions the commissioners approved, giving community organizations longer to complete their funded projects from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA):

• Financial Pathways of the Piedmont, Inc. which received $344,000 for financial counseling services to help prevent low- and moderate-income residents from losing their homes due to a household's inability to pay their mortgage.
• Habitat for Humanity, which received $110,000 to provide 11 families with $10,000 down-payment assistance.
• YWCA of Winston-Salem, which received $85,000 to purchase a mini-van and replace or repair buses for the Best Choice Center, a year-round academic enrichment program for low-income children.
• Old Salem, which received $391,875 to refurbish the Tavern Museum, Volz Barn, Herbst House, Blum House and Tavern Woodshed buildings that were important to the lives of enslaved individuals and open them to visitors as part of the official Old Salem tour experience. Old Salem will also use the funds in its restoration activities to replace the cedar shingle roof of its St. Phillips African American Moravian Log Church.

Commissioners' meetings and briefings are open to the public. They begin at 2 p.m. on Thursdays and are held on the fifth floor of the Forsyth County Government Center. Meetings where commissioners vote on items and hear public comments are usually held twice a month. Briefings on the items they’ll vote on in upcoming meetings are typically held on a weekly basis.
